In recognition of the extraordinary abundance and diverse assemblage of dolphins and whales, former President Fidel V. Ramos signed Presidential Proclamation 1234, declaring Tañon Strait as a protected seascape.
Known for its importance as feeding, breeding and resting grounds for cetacean, Tañon Strait covers an area of 534,589 hectares.
In February 28, Executive Order 76 was signed by then President Joseph Estrada constituting the Tañon Strait Commission to serve as the planning, policy, and program coordinating body for the accelerated, balance and sustainable development of Tañon Strait.
In February 11, by virtue of Executive Order 72 signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Tañon Strait Commission was abolished. The appropriations, records and properties of Tañon Commission were transferred to Atlas Commission by virtue of Executive Order 96 dated April 18, 2002.
November 10 - Department Administrative Order 2008-26 or the Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations (RIRR) of Republic Act 7586 was issued by the DENR. One salient provision in the RIRR, Rule 12.5 allows the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of TSPS to create an Executive Committee.
September 2, 2009 - through Executive Order 9, the Governor of Cebu created the TSPS Executive Committee to oversee the management of the Cebu side of TSPS. Two (2) Site Management Units (SMU) were also established in the Negros Oriental side.
Membership of the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape - Executive Committee members was updated.
September - Membership of TSPS - Protected Area Management Board (Executive Committee and Site Management Units) was updated and renewed.
November - The first TSPS - PAMB SMU - Negros Occidental meeting was conducted in Talisay City, Negros Occidental
