Today, October 11, 2023, the Department of Environment and Natural Resource - Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (DENR-TSPS) conducts the Integrated Coastal Management activity for the local government unit and its stakeholders of the municipality of Tuburan, Cebu.

The Integrated Coastal Management activity aims to enlighten the coastal communities of Tuburan about the recent updates for the map of delineated zones, biophysical survey results, mainstream river profiles within TSPS, integration of ICM to its Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP), and the Coastal Resource Management of 2020 by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA).

As per Exsofel Mary S. Amar, the Assistant Protected Area Superintendent of Midwest Cebu, the Integrated Coastal Management activity incorporates and encourages the coastal communities to be a part for the decision making of the municipality's CLUP pursuant to R.A. 7160 also known as the Local Government Code of 1991. "We at the DENR, we are mandated to provide technical assistance sa inyohang coastal management program… kauban ang DILG ug DHSUD. "

A little later, the Municipal Mayor of Tuburan, Hon. Democrito Diamante graced the activity with his presence. During his stay, he instilled the importance of this activity not only to the coastal communities but for the overall growth of their municipality. “Ang atong coastal planning is holistic ang approach para mapahimuslan sa tanan. Daghan tag sanctuaries nga dapat nato e preserve nya dapat consistent atong pagpananom sa mga bakhaw ug ang atong pag protect sa atong coastal areas.”

The activity, spearheaded by Engineer Jean Canyn Arias followed by the presentations of Joselito Francis Alcaria, the Coastal Enforcement Officer of TSPS who presented the results of the recent biophysical survey, Kenneth Lastimosa, the Data Management Officer of TSPS, who presented the existing structures within the coasts of the municipality. Ma. Jasmine Sombelon, the Municipal Planning Development Coordinator of Tuburan, presented the Comprehensive Land Use Plan of the municipality. Lastly, Dexter Bonjoc, the Data Management Officer/Geographic Information System Operator of TSPS, presented the existing river profiles within the municipality.

After the presentations, an opening forum was mobilized for the participants to raise their concerns towards the presenters.

During the open forum, it was observed that there are four coastal communities that  lacked the data for their coastal resources. It was found out later that during the conduct of biophysical assessment, a storm was brewing thus, the team discontinued the conduct of biophysical assessment for their safety. To resolve the issue, the department assured the stakeholders that a team will be dispatched to conduct biophysical assessment in accordance with their request.

As the activity reaches its conclusion, the office is hopeful that knowledge and information being imparted to the coastal communities will aid them in their decision-making process for the management of their coastal resources. Rest assured, the office of TSPS will always be available if ever the municipality is in need of technical assistance.
