By the virtue of Presidential Proclamation no. 57, s. 1998, the month of May was officially declared as the Month of the Ocean in the Philippines, which recognizes and commemorates the peak season of fishing in the Philippines.  The declaration serves as a critical reminder to each Filipino on the importance of sustainable fishing and the preservation of the country’s natural resources.

Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS), as one of the largest marine protected areas (MPA) in the country, it is imperative to highlight its critical role of protecting its marine resources to the local coastal communities. With this in mind, and in celebration of the Month of the Ocean, the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) of TSPS along with Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) - Cebu orchestrated a coastal-clean-up activity at Maravilla, Tabuelan, Cebu and is participated by the Philippine Coast Guard, LGU Maravilla, Tabuelan, and the coastal residents of Maravilla, Cebu. The activity reached a total of 90 participants solidifying this initiative as the collective commitment of the participants in preserving the marine ecosystem and promoting sustainable practices.

Am Prospero S. Lendio, the Deputy Protected Area Superintendent of TSPS highlights the significance of this activity towards the protection and conservation of the marine resources of the ocean. He also emphasized the importance of taking actions towards environmental sustainability through the support of all the barangay local government units (BLGUs), local government units (LGUs), and other stakeholders.

“Ang atong kadagatan, importante ug angay ampingan ug ang atong pagabuhaton nga clean-up karon kay atong commitment sa atong kadagatan. Maong dako akong pagpasalamat sa BLGU sa Barangay Maravilla sa pagtungha para limpyuhan ang atoang kadagatan.” - said the Deputy PASu of TSPS.

The TSPS-PAMO hopes that through the ocean clean-up event organized today, it will become the stepping stone in a series of activities in Maravilla that will educate the community and instill the importance of environmental stewardship and responsibility. May this experience imprint the importance of reduction of plastic consumption and waste pollution in the standpoint of the participants, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment to preserving our oceans for the future generations.
